Duties:

The role of the Clinical Nurse Educator is to provide professional practice and work-place clinical support to all nursing staff employed in the Operating Room Suite. Major components of the position include preceptor/mentor responsibilities, in-service co-ordination and evaluation, orientation of new staff, and demonstration of clinical procedures. The Clinical Nurse Educator is accountable to the Nurse Manager of Operating Room Suite for the provision of clinical support services and works with the Cluster Nursing and Midwifery Clinical Support Nurse to assist in achieving objectives. This role has the responsibility for assisting staff to achieve mandatory training requirements and optional clinical skills. There is also a requirement to develop and assess clinical nursing competencies for staff when required. The Clinical Nurse Educator also has the responsibility to assist with the development of policies and procedures relating to nursing practice and any other educational requirements specific to the clinical area. The role will involve at times working shifts to provide clinical support to nursing staff (including newly graduated Registered Nurses) working in the perioperative environment. The role only provides direct clinical care in emergencies, not routinely to fill shortages due to unexpected leave. Promotion of continuous professional development and ongoing competency to practise safe and effective nursing care is an essential component of the position.
