Consultant A – Oncologist

Reports To: Chief of Internal Medicine
Category: Grade 3

1. Sharjah Teaching Hospital

Sharjah Teaching Hospital is a private, not-for-profit 210-bed hospital plus a 114 chair dental service, located at the University of Sharjah, United Arab Emirates.
The Hospital was established by HH Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qassimi, Ruler of Sharjah with the objective of providing world standard healthcare.
The hospital will employ approximately 770 employees with an anticipated turnover in excess of Dhs.200million per year.
Sharjah Teaching Hospital is strongly affiliated with the tertiary sector via the College of Medicine and Health Sciences at the University of Sharjah which has a relationship with Monash University in Melbourne Australia for their medical and pharmacy degree courses and the University of Adelaide for their dental degree course.

2. Position Summary

This is a con-joint position between the Sharjah Teaching Hospital and the Faculty of Medicine at University of Sharjah.
The special nature of the Clinician’s role derives from its 2 major components of academic and clinical service and both are integral in the assessment of the applicant.
Being one of the clinical roles within the Clinical Services of the hospital and university, the position will require a person who has practiced for at least 10 years as a Consultant post highest education qualifications and who has had international healthcare and academic experience. It is a pivotal role in the establishment of academic and general oncology services at the hospital to ensure services are at an International standard and to meet and exceed accreditation standards.

4. Responsibilities & Accountabilities
Strategic

  • To provide clinical advice on the establishment and development of the Internal Medicine Unit; 
  • Assist with clinical activities designed to raise Sharjah Teaching Hospital profile as a quality Internal Medical service within the community;
  • To assist in the academic development of College of Medicine direction, programmes and curricula; 
  • Support the development of and maintenance of teaching standards of Internal Medical Specialists and residents;


Operational Management
Clinical

  • Assist with the functions related to coordination of Consultants, Specialists and junior staff working rosters to ensure the effective and smooth running of the department occurs;
  • Liaise with the Chief of Internal Medicine on issues of clinical risk and actively participate in clinical audits, performance reviews and clinical governance; 
  • Support models of care for delivery of quality of care;
  • Develop, manage and maintain strong professional relationships with the Nurse Unit Managers to ensure an integrated approach to service delivery;
  • Support the development of policies and procedures and ensure they are constantly reviewed and suggest updates to align with International best practice; 
  • Follow any other instruction as directed by the Chief of Internal Medicine

Academic

  • Assist with the medical, pharmacy and dentistry curriculum
  • Teaching and training of students
  • Management of doctors in training
  • Supervise clinical tuition
  • Assist with continual professional development
  • Maintaining ongoing academic research
  • Contribution to service planning and future workforce design


Human Resources Management

  • Manage any staff within the area of responsibility through both a vertical reporting relationship and a horizontal professional relationship;
  • Provide leadership and support for direct reports, appraise their performance and ensure that staff receive appropriate performance management, professional training and development opportunities;
  • Provide a safe and positive workplace by enhancing occupational health and safety requirements, as well as monitoring the operations and continuous improvement of the safety management system.

5. Key Person Specifications
Qualifications/Experience

  • M.B.Ch.B (M.B.B.S.)
  • Ph.D., fellowship or membership of one or more world recognised colleges or equivalent or having a professor rank in specialty field 
  • 10 years as a consultant after obtaining the highest Degree

6. Key Selection Criteria (Skills & Experience)

  • Mandatory: Achievement of Qualifications and Experience as outlined
  • Demonstrated experience in the provision of medical services in a international health care setting 
  • Demonstrated experience in/or understanding of the requirements of a Clinician in Oncology 
  • Demonstrated experience in getting a team to achieve quality health care outcomes 
  • Proven ability to support and assist in policies and procedures as required 
  • Demonstrated commitment to the process of Clinical Governance
    • Excellent communication, written and presentation skills 
  • Demonstrated ability to be flexible in different cultural environments
