Professor of Medical Imaging

Reports To: Chief Medical Officer – Hospital and Clinical Issues
Dean of Medicine – Academic Educational Commitments

1. Sharjah Teaching Hospital


Sharjah Teaching Hospital is a private, not-for-profit 210-bed hospital located alongside the Medical School at Sharjah University in the emirate of Sharjah, United Arab Emirates.

The hospital was established by HH Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi with the objective of providing state-of-the-art, world standard healthcare in the fields of Obstetrics/Gyanaecology; Medical and Cardiology, Gastroenterology, Surgical Services
and Emergency Department services to the Sharjah community.
The hospital employs approximately 770 employees and has an anticipated turnover of Dhs.200million per year.


Sharjah Teaching Hospital is strongly affiliated with the tertiary sector via the Medical School at Sharjah University which has a relationship with the Faculty of Medicine at Monash University in Melbourne Australia, and the dental degree course based on the
University of Adelaide curriculum.

2. Position Summary

This is a con-joint position between the Sharjah Teaching Hospital and the Faculty of Medicine at University of Sharjah.
The special nature of the Consultants role derives from its 2 major components of academic and clinical service and both are integral and equal in the assessment of the applicant.

This integrated commitment requires the successful applicant to give equal priority to the objectives of both the University and the Hospital.
Being one of the pre-eminent roles within the Clinical Services of the hospital and university, the position will require a person who has a minimum of 15 year’s post highest education qualifications and who has had international healthcare and academic experience and has practiced for at least 10 years as a Consultant.

It is a pivotal role in the establishment of academic and general surgical services at the hospital to ensure services are at an International standard and to meet and exceed accreditation
standards.

4. Responsibilities & Accountabilities
Strategic

  • To provide strategic advice on the establishment and development of the General Surgical Unit;
  • Lead and manage activities designed to raise Sharjah Teaching Hospital profile as a General Imaging service within the community; 
  • Establish strong relationships with key stakeholders both within Sharjah Teaching Hospital, the University of Sharjah and the Ministry of Health;
  • To participate and contribute to the strategic development of College of Medicine direction, programmes and curricula;
  • Lead the development of and maintain teaching standards of General Imaging Specialists and residents; 
  • Develop performance indicators and associated monitoring systems for the activities within this portfolio.

Clinical

  • Lead and manage the functions related to coordination of Consultants, Specialists and junior staff working rosters to ensure the effective and smooth running of the department occurs; 
  • Liaise with the Chief Medical Officer on issues of clinical risk and actively participate in clinical audits, performance reviews and clinical governance; 
  • Assess models of care as to their suitability for delivery of quality of care;
  • Develop, manage and maintain strong professional relationships with the Medical Imaging Unit Managers to ensure an integrated approach to service delivery;
  • Supervise the development of policies and procedures and ensure they are constantly reviewed and updated to align with International best practice; 
  • Follow any other instruction as directed by the Chief Medical Officer

Academic

    Human Resources Management

  • Provide leadership and support for direct reports, appraise their performance and ensure that staff receive appropriate performance management, professional training and development opportunities;
  • Provide a safe and positive workplace by enhancing occupational health and safety requirements, as well as monitoring the operations and continuous improvement of
    the safety management system.

Qualifications/Experience

  • Highest professional qualification in his/her specialty
  • 10 years as a consultant with international health care experience Key Behavioural Requirements
  • Able to work in a culturally diverse setting and be sensitive to specific cultural requirements in the provision of surgical services

6. Key Selection Criteria (Skills & Experience)

  • Mandatory: Achievement of Qualifications and Experience as outlined
  • Demonstrated experience in the provision of medical imaging services in a international health care setting
  • Demonstrated experience in/or understanding of the requirements of a Professor of Unit 
  • Demonstrated experience in leading a team to achieve quality health care outcomes 
  • Proven ability to develop and implement policies and procedures as required 
  • Extensive networking capability and the ability to interact and influence key stakeholders
  • Demonstrated commitment to the process of Clinical Governance
  • Excellent communication, written and presentation skills
